Cherry visits Japan

2023

チェリーが来日 (Rōmaji: cherī ga rainichi) which directly translates to “Cherry is coming to Japan” or “Cherry visits Japan” is all about fulfilling a childhood dream. I've had a thing for Japan and its culture for a while now. I've been learning the language for about a year, and my upcoming visit has inspired me to create a sleek and balanced design inspired by the awesome work of Japanese artists and designers. In this poster, I display various cultural elements, spanning from food to symbols with cultural and spiritual significance. It offers a unique perspective on these aspects as seen through Cherry's eyes.

Discovery

When I was brainstorming, I had a distinct vision in mind for what I intended to convey through this poster. The most challenging aspect was crafting the central character, Cherry, a name inspired by my online persona. Once that was done, I was certain that I wanted the design to be sleek, minimalistic, and employ a straightforward color palette.

Reflection

This project encouraged me to break free from my usual illustration style. Instead of my typical highly detailed and intricate approach, I chose to embrace a cleaner and simpler aesthetic. I also opted for a structured and symmetrical design over a more organic one. It served as a valuable opportunity for me to push my own creative boundaries as a designer.
